Margaret Maye

a Bio

Singer-actress Margaret Maye has been critically acclaimed on CBC Radio, and in the Toronto Star, Opera Canada Magazine, Gazeta and other Polish media.

"Experienced Polish-born mezzo-soprano Margaret Maye has a rich, easy, plumy tones and deserves a bigger career in her adopted country."

Paula Citron, arts reviewer Classical 96.3 FM, November 2, 2004.

"Mezzo Margaret Maye was in excellent voice as a colorful gypsy leading an appealing children's choir"
Geoff Chapman, music critic, Toronto Star, November 2004.
"Mezzo Margaret Maye as the jealous Lyubasha has a lush voice and dramatic delivery"

Paula Citron, arts reviewer at Classical 96.3 FM, February 2, 2004.

"Mezzo Margaret Maye, trained in Poland, was very strong, notably in her Act 1 a capella aria"
Geoff Chapman, music critic, Toronto Star, February 2, 2004

"among the worthy cast, one to watch is mezzo-soprano Margaret Maye, who performed both Gretchen and the Grand Duchess. She can both sing and act with verve."
Paula Citron, arts reviewer, Opera Canada Magazine, Spring 2002.

Ms. Maye has been an enthusiastic participant in Canadian cultural life since she first arrived in Canada in 1989. She joined the Polish-Canadian Society of Music and later the Salon of Music and Poetry. Since then she has held singing and dramatic leads in a countless number of performances of that company.

She has also collaborated with other companies including Opera in Concert, Toronto Operetta Theatre, Summer Opera Lyric Theatre, City Opera Mississauga, Polonia Theatre, Polish Music Theatre, Toronto Sinfonietta, Cabaret “Pod Banka” and many others.

Margaret has shared her talent and passion for singing, music and theatre for nearly seventeen years in Canada. In recognition of her significant and continuing contributions to the arts, Margaret Maye was presented with the prestigious Order of Merit from the Ministry of Culture of The Republic of Poland, in December 2004.

As with all dedicated artists, the radiant performances of this mezzo-soprano are the fortuitous result of talent, time, study and preparation.

Passionately dedicated to her work, she is always striving for artistic excellence. In her search for communication and artistic expression she explores different music styles and genres, constantly testing and challenging her abilities.

Her musical tastes and boundaries have continued to change and to expand. Building upon training and performances that encompass opera and musical theatre, as well as oratorio and other early styles, she has also explored the best of what contemporary musical genres have to offer.

Today she is an eclectic vocalist, a classical singer with both a great respect for the past and an enthusiastic embrace of contemporary music.

This versatile singer and actress had established herself as an outstanding performer in various musical genres. Her strongly varied repertoire extends from early and modern music, opera, and oratorio, to include operetta, music theatre, cabaret and jazz.

In addition to a voice of beautiful sound, great range and flexibility, this sensitive artist brings a commanding stage presence and dramatic ability to all of her performances.

One seldom sees such talents united in the same performer. She has an impressive ability to adjust her voice and expressive rendition to the many diverse styles of her performances.

This exuberant chanteuse is known for her interpretations of cabaret and music theatre songs from the repertoire of E. Piaf, M. Dietrich, B. Brecht, Hanka Ordonowna and Jaroslaw Abramow-Neverly. She moves with ease through this repertory with the charisma and the kind of “edge” necessary for these styles.

With the potent combination of her talents, MM has graced the audiences with expressive performances, elegant vocal gifts, poise and charismatic stage presence, and proven that she is equally at home with sultry Latin tempos and the edge of music theatre as she is with soaring operatic flights (particularly in her portrayals in the title roles of Bizet’s Carmen, Gluck’s Orfeus and Mozarts’s Idamante).

Over the years she has built a loyal and growing following.

Born in Poland, Margaret’s lengthy and intensive studies have included singing, drama and dancing at the School of Music and Dramatic Arts at the Music Theatre in Gdynia and the Music Academy in Wroclaw.

While in Poland she was employed at the Music Theatre in Gdynia and toured with the Baltic Artistic Agency. Now she makes her home in Toronto.

She has sung as a soloist in many concerts in Poland, France, Canada and United States.

She is comfortable performing in a variety of languages, including English, Polish, Russian French, Italian, Spanish, German and Latin.

Among the many highlights of her career, Margaret participated in the Jeunesse Musical Festival in France singing alto solo in Pergolesi's Stabat Mater and was for many years a member of Musica Antiqua Vocal Ensemble, a group specializing in oratorio and early music.

Her dramatic performances also include television and film productions.

In addition to her career as a soloist, she has clearly demonstrated her abilities as a producer, presenting her own shows. These include “Images”, presented at the Premiere Dance Theatre, and “On the Wings of Love”, at the CBC Glenn Gould Theatre.

Since the inception of Bravo International, Ms. Maye has produced a number of interesting events, exploring inventive ideas and rich repertoire. Her productions have explored the connections extending from traditional and

modern, classical and jazz, Western music and Latin, Broadway, musical theatre and cabaret.

Her classical training in the Western tradition inspired her to apply the same discipline to her interest in other styles. She integrates different elements into a fusion of musical styles, genres and languages. Blending her formal training with jazz, Latin music and popular culture into a rich mélange, was a natural evolution – and the next step on her musical journey.

Miss Maye places great importance on giving back to the community. She has been generously

donating her work, time and performances for many different community causes. In both her professional and volunteer activities, she has done much to promote the arts through her work with such organizations as Toronto Sinfonietta Orchestra, the Polish-Canadian Congress, Polish Combatants Association, Pole’s Association in Canada, Polish Scouts Association, CHIN, Radio Polonia, Polish Orphans Foundation, Polish Canadian Women Federation, Polish Canadian Women’s Heritage Fund,  Polonia Theater, Polish Canadian Society of Music, Toronto Operetta and others.

She has also demonstrated an ongoing commitment to improving the quality of life for others in need, particularly those with epilepsy. This commitment has led her to donate performances for Epilepsy Ontario, Toronto Epilepsy and Epilepsy Research at the University of Toronto. The next concert project, “Come a little closer” will donate the net proceeds to Epilepsy Toronto. Margaret wishes to sustain this fundraising event on an annual basis.

Toronto Hot Talk

with entertainment critic

Cayle Chernin

Friends,

I highly recommend this excellent film that opens this weekend. I saw it and it's really fantastic!  the struggle of the film maker son and his father to connect across the abyss of hurt and years of separation is compelling, amusing, heart-breaking and a real study of Fathers and Sons and Men. As Bryan and Bill Friedman revisit and navigate the 'narrows' of mind and body, the Son's search not just for the Father but for the man in himself and the Father's narcissistic, yet touching committement to the physical development of an ageing body, we are privy to some extra-ordinary moments of insight into the male psyche and to what it means to be a man circa 'now'...there's so much more to say, how about seeing and then we can discuss it.

Movie details & trailer

First Weekend Club is proud to introduce you to, and ask you to support The Bodybuilder and I November 2nd opening weekend. This is a most unique and pressing documentary. And by that we mean bench-pressing!

This interesting, funny and often ironically sensitive documentary looks at deep rooted issues that come to surface for 26 year old filmmaker, Bryan Friedman as he explores and tries to come to terms with his real life and mostly estranged father, 59-year-old Bill Friedman, who now after a divorce has left his job and unhealthy habits to become a world champion body builder. Yes. That’s right. A 59-year-old champion level ‘geriatric division’ bodybuilder. Complete with an obsession of carb-cutting, bronzing oils, flexdancing choreography and short shorts that would make Superman shy.

After years of being absent to the father-son relationship, 59 year old body builder Bill Friedman allows his son filmmaker Bryan Friedman to follow his life of training, leading up to his final competition before retirement, and in doing so allows the possibility for the first real chance at connection with his son.

Told with humour and sensitivity, The Bodybuilder and I is a feature documentary about success, failure, shame and family. It is a journey into the strange subculture of geriatric bodybuilders and into the life of a man who is determined to regain his status as champion. And it is the journey of an estranged son trying to discover who his father really is – in hopes that he can learn to love and respect him for the first time.

Performer-Agent Relationship
List of Agents
List of Casting Directors

The Entertainment Industry Coalition
(EIC) was formed in early 1996 to deal with the problem of unethical talent agents. Their work grew from the experience of AMIS - The Acting and Modeling Information Service, an industry watchdog which runs an information hotline & website about the business practices of talent and modeling agents.

The EIC promotes a Code of Conduct for talent and modeling agents who want to run their business in an ethical manner.

Here are some quick things to watch out for if you're looking for an agent:

1. Real agents don't guarantee work if you sign on with them.

2. Real agents don't require you to buy services from affiliated photo studios, training schools or video producers.

3. Real agents don't represent extras, models and principal performers in the same organization.

4. Real agents don't advertise or hand out leaflets.

5. Real agents make money if you make money - they don't charge you high fees if you're not working.

As a professional performer, one of the most important relationships you will have is with your agent. At its heart, the performer-agent relationship is a partnership where both sides have distinct responsibilities. You devote your life to being a professional and maintaining a good reputation. Your agent arranges auditions, schedules availability and - most importantly - negotiates your remuneration.

- Your agent - the first person to call
- Common performer problems and who to call
- How much do I pay my agent?
- What if my agent isn't representing me properly?
- How can I tell if my agent is a rip off artist?
- If I'm just starting out - How do I get an agent?

Your agent - the first person to call
When you run into problems on set or haven't been paid, you should call your agent FIRST - unless the matter involves an immediate threat to the safety of you or other performers.

It's your agent's responsibility to represent your concerns to production - that's one of the things agents do in return for their commission.

If your agent cannot resolve the issue by speaking with production - then it's time to involve ACTRA.

Common performer problems and who to call:

Problem:
I haven't been paid for that gig I did a while ago. I know I'm supposed to get paid within two weeks…

Call First:
Your Agent.
It's his/her job to make sure you get paid. Get your agent to call the production company and find out.

Then Call:
If your agent can't get you the money - CALL ACTRA TORONTO and ask for the steward responsible for the production you worked on.

Problem:
I was given extra dialogue in my scene - should I be paid more?

Call First:
Your Agent.
He/she will talk to production and negotiate on your behalf if the situation merits an additional payment or an upgrade.

Then Call:
If you are entitled to an upgrade but your agent can't get you one - CALL ACTRA Toronto. The steward can view the scene and see if the production can be grieved.

Problem:
There's a stunt in my script but it wasn't mentioned in my contract.

Call First:
Your Agent.
He/she will talk to production and negotiate a new rate - or if you don't want to do the stunt, he/she will tell them so. Remember - you have the right to refuse work that you feel is unsafe.

Then Call:
If you can't get in touch with your agent, call ACTRA Toronto. We can intervene if necessary.

Problem:
There are children on my set who are being worked overtime.

Call First:
CALL ACTRA RIGHT AWAY. Overtime is strictly forbidden for young children and limited for adolescents. If you see children being worked overtime, call the ACTRA office right away and don't leave a message - make sure you speak to a live person!

REMEMBER - YOU SHARE THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS WITH YOUR AGENT AND ACTRA. TOGETHER - WE MAKE THE STANDARDS WORK!

How much do I pay my agent?
Agents work on a commission basis - so you don't pay them anything unless they get you work.

The standard rate for non-background commissions in Canada is 15% of your gross earnings as a performer.

What id my agent isn't representing me properly...?
If you feel you're not getting the service from your agent that you deserve, let him/her know how you feel. Because your agent has definite obligations to you - it's up to him/her to work hard on your behalf.

It's not uncommon for performers to change agents several times in their careers. But it's up to you to make that choice if you feel you are not being represented properly.

How can I tell if my agent is a rip-off artist?
Most legitimate agents - but not all - belong to an organization called TAMAC - the Talent Agents and Managers Association of Canada.

Many agents (including all TAMAC agents) are also signatories to the Entertainment Industry Coalition (EIC) code of ethics, which lays out what an agent's obligations are toward his/her clients.

A quick way to tell if your agent is on the up-and-up is to ask them if they are a signatory to the EIC Code.

Other quick hints:

- Real agents don't ask for cash up-front from their clients. (Agents only make money if you make money)

- Real agents don't give courses in-house or require you to buy services (videos, photographs) from them or from a related company.

- Real agents don't guarantee you work if you sign with them.

- Real agents don't advertise in newspapers or hand out flyers.

If I'm just starting out - how do I get an agent?

Many people who join ACTRA already have an agent.

Presenting yourself as a professional who is serious about your craft is the surest way to be considered for representation by an agent. Since a good agent will devote a significant amount of time and resources to marketing you as a performer - they want to be sure that you are professional.

You should have a portfolio of your work, including a summary of your professional and related work, a reel of any appearances in the recorded media and press clippings related to your career.

Don't be dismayed if you have to talk to several agents before finding one with

whom you feel comfortable.
